In 1964, in the town of Fairwater, Johnny Bartlett is executed for murdering 12 people at Fairwater sanatorium, driven by his desire to become the most prolific serial killer. His teenage lover, Patricia Ann Bradley, is sentenced to prison despite a lack of evidence that she helped Bartlett. Decades later, he is released into her mother's custody. Architect Frank Bannister lives in the decrepit shell of the house he was building for his late wife Debra, who died under mysterious circumstances after a car accident that left him with psychic abilities to see and communicate with ghosts. As a cynical con man, Frank uses his new abilities to "exorcise" hauntings staged by ghostly partners, but when a Grim Reaper-like entity begins killing people in the small town where he lives, Frank must investigate the supernatural mystery and confront his own dark past.
