Heath Ledger stars as William Thatcher, a peasant squire who poses as a knight and competes in tournaments, winning accolades and acquiring friendships with historical figures like Edward the Black Prince and Geoffrey Chaucer, who writes the film's title story from Chaucer's work. William wins the tournament, takes the prize, and goes on to achieve several victories, while also navigating romance, rivalry, and identity. The film's 14th-century story is intentionally anachronistic, with many modern pop culture references and a soundtrack featuring 1970s music.
