Dark Money tracks the influence of corporate money in contemporary American politics, using Montana as a primary case study. The film follows investigative journalist John S. Adams and Montana Attorney General Steve Bullock (and later Governor) as they navigate the complex history of corporate influence in state politics. Dark Money examines how the Citizens United v. FEC Supreme Court decision has led to an increase in anonymous corporate spending in elections, and how one state is pushing back against this trend through legislation such as the Montana Disclose Act.
