In rural China's Shandong province during the Second Sino-Japanese War, a young woman named Jiu'er is forced into an arranged marriage with a leper who owns a remote sorghum winery. After her mysterious death, she becomes the matriarch of a community that takes over the winery and establishes a quasi-matriarchal society. When Japanese invaders threaten their land, the community rises up in resistance, fueled by Jiu'er's spirit and the power of the sorghum fields to heal and bring people together.
