Professor Lawrence Wetherhold (Dennis Quaid) is a widowed parent struggling to connect with his children, who are equally dysfunctional. His step-brother Chuck (Thomas Haden Church), whom he's trying to help, becomes a live-in driver after Vanessa sets up a "win/win" solution. As Lawrence navigates his complicated life, he meets Dr. Janet Hartigan (Sarah Jessica Parker), an old student turned love interest, who challenges his self-absorption and helps him become a more involved parent and professor.
