In "Shame," Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow play Eva and Jan Rosenberg, former violinists living on a rural island during civil war. The couple's home is bombed, and they are captured by invading troops, who use a manipulated interview with Eva to intimidate them. As the war escalates, their marriage deteriorates due to Eva's sexual favors with Col. Jacobi in exchange for his bank account savings, leading to Jan's violent breakdown. Eventually, Jan kills Col. Jacobi, but not before the soldiers depart, and the couple is left to face an uncertain future.
