In a chaotic and irreverent tale of counterculture excess, Hunter S. Thompson's rise to fame is loosely depicted in this 1980 semi-biographical comedy film. After finishing a story about his former attorney and friend Carl Lazlo, Esq., Thompson flashes back to a series of exploits involving the author and his attorney, including a sensational magazine article about a trial and subsequent adventures with Lazlo. As Thompson's fame grows, he becomes embroiled in a series of surreal events, from covering the 1972 presidential election campaign to joining Lazlo's band of freedom fighters. The film ends with Thompson completing his story, winking at the absurdity of it all, as he declares "it still hasn't gotten weird enough for me".
