Fanny and Alexander

In 1907, young Alexander, his sister Fanny, and their well-to-do family, the Ekdahls, live in a Swedish town running a moderately profitable theatre. The siblings' parents, Emilie and Oscar, are happily married until Oscar's sudden death, which abruptly ends their joyful Christmas festivities. His widow, Emilie, marries Edvard Vergérus, the local bishop, who reveals himself to be a strict and controlling authoritarian, especially towards Alexander.
