In a small Danish village in the early 17th century, a young woman named Anne is forced into a marriage with an elderly pastor after her late mother was accused of witchcraft. She develops sympathy for an old woman, Marte, who is also accused of witchcraft, and as their lives become intertwined, Anne finds herself drawn to the pastor's son, Martin, in a way that threatens the fragile balance of her own existence.
