In the 1930s, Sweden's nomad schools forcibly assimilated Sami children into Swedish culture through language and education, erasing their indigenous identity. A young girl named Elle-Marja, struggling to fit in, escapes her hometown in Lapland to pursue a life of urban respectability in Uppsala, leaving behind her family, language, and heritage. As she navigates her new life, Elle-Marja's experiences are marked by racism, shame, and the struggle for self-acceptance in a society that devalues Sami culture. With the help of a sympathetic outsider, Elle-Marja finds the courage to reclaim her identity and assert her place in the world.
