Jeffrey Mannus (Jon Heder), a 29-year-old book store clerk still living with his mother Jan, has his world turned upside down when she meets Mert Rosenbloom, a motivational speaker who moves in on what Jeffrey perceives as his territory. After Jan and Mert's engagement is announced, Jeffrey finds friendship in Nora Flannagan, an aspiring singer-songwriter, but ultimately discovers his inner self after being kicked out by Jan.
