Jeff and Mari Thompson, played by George Segal and Natalie Wood, are contently married in 1970s California, but their friends and neighbors are going through separations and divorces, leading them to question their own relationship. As they navigate this shift, Mari's old college friend Barbara, played by Valerie Harper, reenters Jeff's life with a fling that makes Mari contemplate an affair of her own.
