In 1976, eleven-year-old Gru dreams of becoming a supervillain, assisted by his loyal Minions, whom he has hired to work for him. He applies to join the Vicious Six, a supervillain team now led by Belle Bottom, but their audition goes poorly - until he steals their most powerful stone, an emerald-encrusted Zodiac Stone.
