In West Los Angeles, bank teller Betty Parrish (Debra Winger) has a one-night stand with young tennis instructor Mike Chuhutsky, who promises to call her for a date but never does. After Mike's murder, Betty tries to find out what happened, leading her into a hornet's nest of vice. As she delves deeper, she learns that Mike was involved in drug dealing and had been struggling to pay off his debts, which he had accumulated from borrowing money from his wealthy rock music producer boyfriend, Philip Green (Paul Winfield).
