Paul Edward Winfield was an American actor born on May 22, 1939. He earned an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of a Louisiana sharecropper in the landmark film Sounder (1972) and portrayed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the television miniseries King (1978). Winfield received four Emmy nominations throughout his career, winning one in 1995 for his role in Picket Fences.
