A young white teacher, Pat Conroy, is assigned to Yamacraw Island, an isolated fishing community off the coast of South Carolina, where he finds a community that knows so little of the world outside their island. The children and adults speak in hushed tones of "Conrack", their best attempt to pronounce his last name. As Conroy tries to teach them about the outside world, he faces resistance from the principal and superintendent, and ultimately must overcome parental fears to bring hope and understanding to the children, even if it means leaving them behind.
