Sheriff John Higgins (John Wayne) believes he accidentally killed his best friend Dan Matthews during a shootout with robbers, leading him to resign his badge and become a prospector. As he helps Bess Matthews (Lucile Browne), the daughter of the late rancher, manage her struggling ranch, she begins to uncover the truth about Dan's death. John must confront outlaws threatening the ranch, form alliances with local Native Americans, and ultimately clear his name and win Bess's forgiveness and love through action and confrontation.
