This 1996 film is a semi-autobiographical and metafictional account of Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf's experience as a teenager when he stabbed a policeman at a protest rally. Two decades later, Makhmalbaf tracks down the policeman he injured in an attempt to make amends. Through a complex web of filming and interactions with his young self, the director attempts to jointly evoke both the passion against political injustice of a young man and his older, wiser perspective. The film ultimately ends with a poignant freeze-frame that leaves a lasting impression on its audience.
