The Racket is a 1951 black-and-white drama film noir directed by John Cromwell and uncredited directors Nicholas Ray, Tay Garnett and Mel Ferrer. The film stars Robert Mitchum as Captain Thomas McQuigg, the only honest police captain on the force, who takes on the violent mob boss Nick Scanlon (played by Robert Ryan) after partnering with local crime boss Nick Scanlon. McQuigg's loyal patrolman, Johnson (played by William Talman), and reporter Dave Ames are helpful in his efforts to stop all mob corruption in the city, while sexy nightclub singer Irene Hayes is persuaded to testify against Scanlon, putting her life in danger.
