Sanyal's notable roles include Chand Bhatta in Meerabai and Rajrani Meera, a biographical film on the mystic Meerabai. He was a prominent figure in Bengali cinema, balancing his distinctive style with the likes of Chhabi Biswas and Kamal Mitra.
