Biography

María Mercader, born María de la Asunción Mercader Forcada on March 6, 1918, was a Spanish film actress known for her roles in "Un garibaldino al convento" (1942). She left her native Spain for Italy in 1939 and later became the second wife of renowned film director Vittorio De Sica. Mercader's life was also marked by a notable familial connection, being the aunt by marriage of Caridad Mercader, whose son Ramón Mercader committed the infamous murder of Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky in 1940.
