Walter Lawrence Burke was an American character actor born on August 25, 1908, in Brooklyn's New York City to Irish immigrant parents. He began acting on stage as a teenager, making his Broadway debut in Dearest Enemy and performing in various productions with the American Opera Company from 1928 to 1930. His distinctive voice and face made him easily recognizable in minor supporting roles, often typecast as an Irishman or Englishman.
