Dr. Sidney Schaefer (James Coburn), a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, is chosen by the U.S. government to be the president's top-secret personal psychoanalyst, but he soon becomes overwhelmed by stress and paranoia as he tries to uncover the truth about those spying on him, including his girlfriend Nan (Joan Delaney). As Schaefer goes on the run with the help of an American family, a hippie tribe, and a Russian KGB agent who turns against his own country, he discovers that the true enemy is not foreign spies but a sinister organization known as The Phone Company (TPC), which seeks to implant a mind-control device in every human brain.
