Born Wei Junluo in 1920, she fled to Shanghai during the Second Sino-Japanese War and became a drama and film actress, starring in prominent leftist films. Her career was marked by her portrayal of diverse characters and her tumultuous personal life, including a rumored affair with Mao Zedong, which led to persecution during the Cultural Revolution.
