Biography

Ida Kamińska was a Polish actress and director who began her stage career at five and went on to produce over 70 plays and perform in more than 150 productions. She won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film for her role in The Shop on Main Street (1965), and received nominations for an Oscar and Golden Globe for her performance. A pioneer in Yiddish theatre, she immigrated to the US after World War II and continued to act and direct, including starring in Mother Courage and Her Children on Broadway in 1967.
