Ivor Novello was a Welsh composer and actor who rose to fame as one of Britain's most popular entertainers in the first half of the 20th century. Born into a musical family, he began his career as a songwriter with hits like "Keep the Home Fires Burning" (1914), followed by successful stage shows like Theodore & Co (1917) and numerous musical comedies. He also had notable success in film, starring in Alfred Hitchcock's silent films The Lodger and Downhill (1927).
