Joseph Evans Brown was born on July 28, 1891, in Holgate, Ohio, and began his career as a circus tumbler at age ten with the Five Marvelous Ashtons. He later became a professional baseball player before transitioning into vaudeville and eventually Broadway, where he developed his comedic persona. Brown's amiable screen presence and elastic-mouth smile earned him popularity in films like "Some Like It Hot" and "Bright Lights."
