José Lewgoy was a Brazilian actor born in Veranópolis on November 16, 1920, to a Russian father and an American mother. He appeared in over 100 films, including Werner Herzog's "Fitzcarraldo" (1982) as Don Aquilino, and was known for his role as Don Octavio Coutinho in the 1987 film "Cobra Verde." Lewgoy studied at Yale University before embarking on his acting career.
