He joined the Moscow Art Theatre's Second Studio in 1919 and became a prominent figure in the theatre, exceling in roles such as Tsar Fyodor, Karenin, and Tuzenbach. Khmelyov's stage performances were marked by extreme tension and clarity, earning him critical recognition and fame. He passed away in 1945.
