Carmelo Bene
Biography
Carmelo Bene (1937-2002) was a celebrated Italian avant-garde theatre and cinema exponent. Notably, he won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival for his 1968 film Our Lady of the Turks, and his films are characterized by their satirical critique of heterosexuality and inventive visual style. Bene's work often deflated masculine pretenses, featuring hapless male characters and enigmatic female ones, instead focusing on spectacle and meaninglessness.
