Biography

Dolly Rathebe was a South African musician and actress who rose to fame in 1949 at age 21 with her appearance in the British-produced movie Jim Comes To Jo'burg, marking one of the first films to portray urban Africans in a positive light. She went on to become a star of Alf Herbert's African Jazz and Variety show, and sang with the Afro jazz group, the Elite Swingsters, in 1964. Rathebe also appeared in notable films like "Cry, the Beloved Country" (1995) and "Mapantsula" (1988).
