A South-African preacher, Rev. Stephen Kumalo (James Earl Jones), is requested to Johannesburg in 1946 to search for his wayward son, Absalom, who has committed a crime. There, he discovers that his son is arrested for the murder of a white man, and meets James Jarvis (Richard Harris), a white man who supports apartheid. The film explores their unexpected understandings about their sons and shared humanity as they navigate race relations in post-apartheid South Africa.
