Biography

Suheir Hammad is a Palestinian-American poet, author, and political activist born on October 25, 1973, in Amman, Jordan. Her childhood as a refugee in Brooklyn, New York City, influenced her work with stories of dispossession from her parents' experiences in Palestine before and after the 1948 displacement. She gained recognition through her poem "First Writing Since," which led to a deal with HBO's Def Poetry Jam, allowing her to share original works.
