Wilfred Pickles

Biography

Wilfred Pickles was a Yorkshireman born in Halifax in 1904, who became an actor and radio presenter. He joined an amateur dramatic society, where he met his future wife, Mabel Cecilia Myerscough, before being selected by the BBC as an announcer for its North Regional radio service. A natural newsreader, Pickles brought a distinct northern accent to the role during WWII, causing some comment among those trying to impersonate BBC broadcasters.
