Billy Liar

Tom Courtenay as Billy Fisher, a young Englishman living in Yorkshire with his parents and grandmother, fantasizes about escaping his mundane life by daydreaming of being the ruler of an imaginary country called Ambrosia. In reality, he works as an undertakers' clerk, hides postage money, and lies to his family and friends, causing chaos in his personal life. His only escape from this drudgery is his imagination, where he gives speeches and adventures himself as a hero, but struggles to differentiate between reality and fantasy. Billy ultimately finds acceptance with free-spirited girlfriend Liz, who understands and encourages his imagination, but must confront the consequences of his lies when he has the opportunity to leave it all behind.
