Mary Alice was a renowned American actress and civil rights activist, born on December 3, 1936 in Indianola, Mississippi. She won an Emmy Award for her recurring role on the series I'll Fly Away and received a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her appearance in August Wilson's Fences. A lifelong liberal Democrat, feminist, and civil rights activist, Alice was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2000 before retiring from acting in 2005. She passed away on July 27, 2022.
