Jofroi sells his orchard to Alphonse, who wants to use the land for crops. When Jofroi learns this, he's furious and threatens to commit suicide, fearing it will ruin Alphonse's life. The story follows the efforts of Alphonse, a curate, and some townsfolk as they try to prevent Jofroi from taking his own life.
