In "The Conversation," Francis Ford Coppola crafts a tense thriller that probes the dark recesses of paranoia and moral crisis. Gene Hackman stars as Harry Caul, a surveillance expert wracked by guilt over his past work, which ended in tragedy, and now finds himself entangled in a web of suspicion when he suspects a couple he's eavesdropping on will be murdered. As Caul's anxiety builds, he becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth behind the ominous phrase he recorded, leading him down a perilous path of surveillance and self-discovery that ultimately forces him to confront the blurred lines between observer and participant.
