Ex-con Zeki Müller goes undercover as a teacher at a below-average Gymnasium to find money he'd stashed prior to incarceration. He takes over Lisi Schnabelstedt's former seventh-grade class and eventually earns their respect through unconventional methods and her soft leadership. As Zeki teaches, his life becomes more stable, with him even arranging an affair for Lisi's little sister Laura and convincing the students not to become drug dealers. In the end, Zeki finds the money he was looking for but decides against a bank heist after being rejected by Lisi, who has come to appreciate him.
