Set against the rugged backdrop of Victorian England's rural West Country, "Far from the Madding Crowd" (1967) tells the story of Bathsheba Everdene, a headstrong and independently minded woman who inherits her uncle's farm and decides to manage it herself. This decision engenders disapproval from the local farming community, but she employs a former neighbour, Gabriel Oak, as a shepherd, sparking jealousy in the likes of William Boldwood, a nearby gentleman farmer. As Bathsheba becomes romantically involved with three widely divergent men - including the dashing and self-serving Sergeant Frank Troy - jealousy, rage, and hate escalate, culminating in a tragic confrontation that ultimately leaves only one man alive.
