Born in East L.A.

A satirical comedy film about Rudy Robles, a Mexican-American from East Los Angeles who is mistaken for an undocumented migrant and deported to Mexico, despite speaking little Spanish or knowing his own status as a U.S. citizen. In Tijuana, he befriends Jimmy and Dolores, and with their help, he navigates the complexities of immigration and cultural identity. The film follows Rudy's journey as he tries to raise the money needed to be smuggled back into the United States, all while learning to rely on himself and find his place in a foreign land. Ultimately, a financial success and praised by critics for its energy and drive, Born in East L.A. became a breakthrough role for director-writer Cheech Marin among the Latino community.
