In 1958 Stockholm, 15-year-old Erik Ponti suffers daily beatings from his sadistic stepfather while his mother plays piano to drown out the noise. To give him a fresh start, Erik's mother sends him to Stjärnsberg Boarding School, where he becomes embroiled in a cruel student council that subjects disobedient students to physical and psychological punishment. As Erik struggles to suppress his violent tendencies, he finds solace in his intellectual roommate Pierre and begins a romance with Marja, a Finnish cafeteria staff member who admires his resilience. With the help of Mr. Ekengren, a family friend and lawyer, Erik confronts the school's corruption and stands up to his stepfather, finally breaking free from a life of abuse and violence.
