Roger Cobb (William Katt), a troubled author and Vietnam veteran, moves into his late aunt Elizabeth Hooper's seemingly haunted house, where he experiences strange and frightening phenomena. He is forced to deal with supernatural occurrences while trying to solve the mystery of his son Jimmy's disappearance. As Roger deliriously explains his experiences to his neighbor Harold Gorton (George Wendt), a worried Harold contacts Roger's ex-wife Sandy Sinclair (Kay Lenz), who brings their young daughter, and later an attractive neighbor convinces Roger to babysit her toddler son, only for freakish creatures to try to abduct the boy.
