In 1987, Olympic wrestling champion Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) speaks at an elementary school in place of his older brother Dave (Mark Ruffalo), who has passed away. Mark is contacted by philanthropist John E. du Pont (Steve Carell), who arranges for him to train with Foxcatcher, a private wrestling team based at du Pont's estate in Pennsylvania. As Mark excels with the team and develops a friendship with du Pont, he also begins to struggle with his own demons, including cocaine use and feelings of overshadowing his late brother. The film follows the tragic events that unfold as du Pont's obsession with wrestling grows, leading to a violent confrontation with Dave.
