In 1910, Chinese martial artist Huo Yuanjia defeats three foreign challengers at an international tournament in Shanghai. As he awaits a fourth match, he reflects on his life. A series of tragic events follows, including the murder of his mother and daughter, and his own exile from Tianjin. After wandering for months, Huo is taken in by Granny Sun and her blind granddaughter, Yueci, who helps him recover physically and spiritually. Eventually, Huo returns to Shanghai and challenges four international fighters, including a Japanese martial artist named Tanaka Anno, whom he defeats honorably and spares from death.
