Isuzu Yamada stars as Otsuta, a widowed mother and geisha house owner in 1950s Tokyo, struggling to pay off her debts and provide for her daughter. Kinuyo Tanaka plays Rika Yamanaka / Oharu, a young widow who takes a job as a maid at the okiya, navigating the complexities of traditional Japanese society and modern change.
