In rural North Carolina, Linda Henry lives a solitary and unfulfilled life with her husband, Henry, who spends most of his free time tinkering with model trains. Her world is turned upside down when Martin, a British hitchhiker claiming to be her long-lost son, arrives in the United States in search of his birthmother. As Linda gets to know Martin, she becomes increasingly unsettled by his erratic behavior and growing obsession with Henry - a philandering man whose only offspring is an expansive model train set that devours his waking hours.
