Thor Heyerdahl, a renowned explorer and adventurer, sets out to prove that people from South America settled Polynesia in pre-Columbian times by embarking on an epic 4,300-nautical-mile journey across the Pacific Ocean on a primitive balsa wood raft, named after the Inca god of sun and storm. Joined by his crew of five men, including an engineer, a radio expert, a navigator, and others, Heyerdahl faces treacherous storms, sharks, and other perils as they battle to reach Polynesia. The three-month odyssey is a test of their skills, endurance, and theories, with the crew's scientific reenactment of the legendary voyage taking them from the coast of Peru to the islands of Polynesia.
