In 1942, Lieutenant Clifton James, a Royal Army Pay Corps officer and amateur actor, is recruited to impersonate General Bernard Montgomery as part of a British misinformation campaign ahead of the North Africa campaign during World War II. Disguised as Montgomery, James tours North Africa with Major Harvey (John Mills) by his side, including Gibraltar, where the governor recognizes the likeness. With only days remaining before the D-Day landings, James's impersonation proves crucial in fooling the Germans and keeping their troops away from Normandy, but at a pivotal moment, the German commandos are thwarted from kidnapping James as well.
