In 1957, James Whale, the director of Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, has retired to a semi-recluse life. Retired and a semi-recluse, he lives his days accompanied only by images from his past, including those with his dour housekeeper, Hanna (Lynn Redgrave), who loyally cares for him but disapproves of his homosexuality. When his long-time housemaid, Hannah (Lynn Redgrave), hires a handsome young gardener, the flamboyant director and simple yard man develop an unlikely friendship, which will change them forever with the help of Clayton Boone (Brendan Fraser).
